Celebrate with Lee's Summit Young Life

-->
With the end of the year approaching I think it is a great time to celebrate all God is doing and continues to do in the hearts of many.  This Christmas many students will celebrate Emanuel, God with us, for the first time.  Together we will celebrate the life and hope that Christ truly gives.

LS YL is in its 13th year and is making a difference in high school students and now middle school students with Wyldlife.  There are so many stories to share with you on how God is using YL to bless students.  Would you take time to watch this video to catch a glimpse of who we are and take a look into the lives of three people impacted by this ministry?

This month we took time to ask many of our donors why they choose to give to Lee’s Summit Young Life. Would you take time to read over what stirs local businessmen, YL alumni, and parents?  If you are a donor already thank you!  You are changing the lives of kids.

From a local businessman:
“We believe that the mission of LS YL has a profound, positive impact on all high school students it touches. Our children were involved in YL years ago, and it helped them grow their relationship with Christ.  We continue to contribute financially, years after my children have graduated, because we view YL as a business, not a club or a sports league that our kids participate in and then move on. Students move on, but the business of YL still needs financial support.  YL staff are required to raise a significant portion of their own salary, in addition to performing their job at the highest level.  I can't imagine even taking a job where the boss says..."here's your job and here's how much money you need to raise if you want to be paid for it'.  YL has all of the expenses and needs that all companies have, and it requires an income stream to survive and thrive.  We view it as an investment in our community that has great potential for reward in our own backyard. The reward is the student that is brought to and brought back to ...Christ.  The reward is what that student can become and contribute to society, with the guidance that God provides.”

From a Parent:
“We give to YL because we believe kids need an avenue to know they are loved by God and that God has a purpose for each and every student.   Kids today at the middle school and high school level, more than ever, need to hear the message of hope, faith and love.  YL gives kids an opportunity to hear about God's love in a real and "down to earth" way, which makes sense to each student.  Without a ministry like YL, some students will never hear about God's love, forgiveness and purpose for life. YL welcomes every teen without judgment and "meets kids where they are at" in a very non-threatening environment.”

From LS YL Alumni:
“Beyond the ministry as a whole, I give because I believe in and desire to support the efforts of Tracee (Mela) Cobb and have the utmost faith that the Lord has placed her as a leader in the Lee's Summit community to bring teenagers to know Christ. Tracee was my YL leader 10 years ago, and she chose to journey alongside me during high school. I watched her experience a daily, life-giving relationship with a God that I previously thought would only connect with me when I was at church. I learned what it looked like to experience this relationship with Him through her intentional, connection to my life and my friends' lives around me. I give because I want Tracee and Lee's Summit YL leaders to be able to continue to complete the profound work God has called them to, and to accomplish the life-changing goals He has set out to achieve in the city of Lee's Summit.”

From a YL Volunteer:
“I give to Young Life because back in 1988, I was given new life in Christ and I want to give back.  Almost 25 years ago, someone else's generous donation allowed YL to be up and running in my hometown.  As a result, a small staff of paid and volunteer leaders were able to reach out to kids at my high school and even take a bunch of us to camp.  That summer, I heard about a love I never knew existed and my life has never been the same.  I believe in YL and the impact it can have on a kid's life.  I believe YL can help change the lives of my own children and their friends.  I'm willing to invest in YL because I know without a doubt I am investing in the kingdom of God.”

Thank you for taking time out to support the ministry of YL and tune into how YL is making a difference in the hearts of kids.  We will continue to go after students to earn the right to be heard, to build relationships in hopes that they may encounter the one who knows them, created them, and loves them always- Jesus Christ.

YL Muckfest 2012

Lee's Summit YL had our annual Muckfest (food fight) to kick off our Fall Semester of YL.
It is amazing to be with high school students and provide a place for them to be kids.  What high school student doesn't crave to be crazy, throw oatmeal, jello, paint, and flour at one another?  What high school student doesn't want to have fun, be free, and be accepted?  We are simply earning the right to be heard.  Young life leaders taking oatmeal to the face and getting messy with kids is meeting students where they are at.  Isn't that what Christ offers?  Doesn't He come to us and meet us there?  YL is doing that for LS students and maybe you thought it was just about throwing oatmeal...  it's about so much more!  God bless the teenagers of LS!

This semester:

Beautiful Things

If you saw Jesus and He asked, "What do you want?" What would you say?

I would want Him to say, "Good job Tracee.  Well done.  You are doing it, living for me, and I'm proud of you."  My heart aches for those words.  I shared this with my cabin one evening at YL camp.  The next night we had YL club and I was exhausted.  Beat down and broken.  A situation had happened that was taking much of my time and energy and distracting me from loving students and Christ.  I just didn't have much left to give.  I was standing by the door to the club room away from our huge crowd of LS students.  Drew and Ellie (the camp musicians for the month) began to sing one of my all time favorite songs, Beautiful Things.  At that moment LS YL students looked around to find me.  ME?  Saying my name- Tracee, come sing with us.  Let me tell you my heart rejoiced.  The fact that LS high school students hear a worship song and think of me and want me to worship beside them is incredible.  It was as if Jesus said, "Good job Tracee.  Well done.  You are doing it, living for me, and I'm proud of you."

 Click to listen:

I'm not sure what you want from Jesus.  I know students want to be loved by Him, to be known, to be heard, to never be left, to be new.  Jesus is answering those requests.  We have been back from camp for over a month and students are still living for purpose.  It has been hard coming down from the mountain of Frontier Ranch but God came back with us.  He promises to never leave us and all things are useable by Him.  Many students have began walking in Christ, some have fallen already.  YL celebrates the steps they took and we help them back up again.  Isn't that grace and mercy?  First the fall, then the recovery from the fall... and walk again.  Both are the mercy of God.

You make me new

You make beautiful things
You make beautiful things out of the dust
You make beautiful things
You make beautiful things out of us

I Never...

LS YOUNG LIFE MAKES IT TO THE TOP OF THE MOUNTAIN!!!  AUGUST 2012

We are back from the best week of our life!  Lee's Summit YL loaded a charter bus and headed to the Rocky Mountains to experience a week at Frontier Ranch.  There are far too many stories of adventure, healing, life, fun, and relationships to share.  So many "I never(s)" happened:

Students said:

-I'd never rapel off a mountain...they did!

-I'd never hike to the top of a 14,000 foot mountain... they did!

-I'd never jump off the platform of the giant swing...they did!

Students on giant swing-"Screamer!"

-I'd never open up and share who I really am to my YL leader or my cabin...they did!

-I'd never talk to God...they did!

-I'd never decide tor really say yes to following Jesus Christ...many did!

We had the best week of our life because of adventure, relationships, and truth.  Many students came back from camp with a deeper or new relationship with Christ.

Listen to what a few said about finding Christ at YL camp...

Before camp I didn’t understand the cross.

After YL camp I know it as love and hope.

Before Christ I hid my pain behind drugs and alcohol.

At camp I let Jesus take my pain away.

Before camp I couldn't forgive myself and allowed lust to control me.

Now I feel forgiven, freed, and made new each morning.

Before Christ I was alone and afraid.

Now I am befriended and found by God.

Before camp I felt never good enough.

Now I know I am perfect in His eyes.

I was consumed with relationships.

Now I'm consumed by God’s love.

Before camp my strength covered up my pain.

I am now freed by God.

Before camp I felt betrayed and blindsided by parents divorce.

Now I feel comforted by Jesus Christ who opened my eyes and halted my questioning.  I have put my full trust in the Lord since YL camp.

I lived under the pressure of being perfect.

Now I'm freed by the love and grace of Jesus Christ.

Felt judged, lonely, and unwanted.

Now I know I’m never alone, always wanted and Christ loves me no matter what.

There is so much more to tell you.  I know this my high school friends have a hunger for truth.  Have hearts that were made new.  Have hurts that God is healing.  Have a desire to follow Christ.  Many are choosing the full life with Christ and came back with hearts of flesh- beating for purpose and fullness in Christ.  AMEN.

John 10:10
10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

Ezekiel 36:26
I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.

Thank you for listening and loving high school students.  It is an honor to see God at work in many hearts.  I'll have to post again soon to share more of these stories.  Thank you for supporting LS YL.  Christ is life!

Did that just happen?

                                               Epic YL Club...3/27/12!

I am not sleeping anytime soon due to the overwhelming joy and honor I feel to be a part of what God is doing in LS through Young Life.  Tonight we had our weekly Club.  I opened the mic up the students to share and simply asked,  "What has God been doing in your life?  How has YL impacted you?"

Little did I know we would leave feeling like a family, feeling God's presence and realness, His love, and be wiping away tears of joy and hope.  Students shared from their heart- their stories of pain, loss, struggle, and how God is real.  How YL showed up and their leader showed up and loved them.  How they now feel like they are not alone because God promises to never leave them.  I cannot put this night in words- so I will use theirs.

Take a glimpse at some of the tweets on Twitter after tonight's club:

Thank you for changing lives. HE IS REAL

Everyone needs Yl in their life!! So moving tonight!

YoungLife was amazing tonight. I can honestly say YL and the leaders have changed my life.

YL isn't intended to judge or make the attenders appear perfect, instead it reminds u that no matter how much u mess up GOD STILL LOVES YOU!!

Best YL club ever. No idea where I would be without , all my leaders, my yl friends, and most important God!

Lastly, I wanted to end with this text from a student I received tonight:

"Driving home, I had to pull over and gather myself from the power of God I felt tonight.  Words cannot how thankful I am to have been introduced to you, YL, and LSCC this year.  I'm getting to know Christ in ways that I never imagined possible.  I feel myself growing and becoming the person I've always wanted to be developing an untouchable bond with God.  I'm learning to turn to Him in every aspect of my life.  Everything good and bad and ugly is strengthening this relationship and I don't think I have ever felt this happy, this filled with life.  It's incredibly reassuring to know there's a support system like YL and people I can go to bc I know I will struggle and this will be hard but unbelievably worth it."

AMEN

Thanks for listening!

Going Public

LS YL has partnered with a local church- Lees Summit Community Christian.  I felt God calling me as Area Director of YL to partner and attend a local church so YL students who don't have a church home would feel safe and welcome to attend.  LSCC has been a great influence on our students and is continuing to stretch them in their faith.  With that partnership God is at work.  Today I had the honor of baptizing two YL students who now attend LSCC.  Through YL have decided to say YES to following Christ.  It has been a joy and a privilege to watch them grow in their journey with Christ and baptize them today!  Celebrate with me what God is doing in LS!
